Dear Rob Reiner-
I resently open a 88 seat theater in Orange County devoted to doing movies on stage. We're planning to do Steven King's Misery in our next season. The rights to do this show are available because someone produced it shortly after the success of your film. Other films you have produced and directed are not available, such as When Harry met Sally, The Princess Bride, and the all time favorite- Spinal Tap. I would love to adapt these movies to stage and expose the public to theater they can relate too. I'm not looking to make a fortune off your material, I just want to put good stories that people are familiar with on stage. If you could offer us limited permission and let us pay royalies on the projects we would be honored to produce them on stage.
Sincerely, Brian Newell Owner Maverick Theater Orange, CA

Mr. Reiner,
You probably never read this message board, but it's worth a try. I was wondering if you would be willing to speak at an event for the Northwestern University College Democrats. It would be a great opportunity for us to hear an experienced and bright man and for us to educate us on your various issues. A possible idea for your lecture could be the effect of Hollywood on the future of the Middle East conflicts and also your domestic concerns such as early child development. I would love to hear from you at b-miller2@northwestern.edu. Sincerely, Brian Miller

Dear Mr. Reiner; My name is Karriem Shabazz. I am an American of African descent living and studying in the Holy Lands. I am writing to solicit your support for a project I think is very worthwhile. I have partner shipped with the local T.V. station here to present the history of the development of the Zionist State of Israel. It is the first comprehensive film to come from the Arab World documenting these events.
I have documented the events leading up to the most expensive debacle the United States has ever been involved in. The issues surrounding Philistine and the "Israeli Jews'" illegal attempts to steal the land from its rightful owners have far reaching implications. It has been a contributing cause of the WTC disaster as well as many other such disasters; both on American soil as well as around the world. The need for this film is that in violation of the First Amendment to the Constitution, Americans are being kept deaf, dumb and blind to the truth of America's foreign policy in the Holy Lands and the Arab world.
The title of my documentary is: The Struggle to Save al-Aqsa and the Holy Lands. This production is a prelude to regular monthly 30-minute programs I intend to produce for the silent American majority. The target population for my productions are the white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant, Catholic, non-Zionist Jew, registered voter, tax payer.
I have contacted you because you have strong contacts in the media. This is not the typical unbalanced and censored footage of Philistine the Zionist owned networks normally show. Therefore, because of its controversial nature and content it has been virtually impossible to get it on air. I need outlets in the United States, Europe and the world. All of my productions include professionally produced film footage of historical incidents that have and are happening here in the Holy Lands.
My purpose for producing this film is to stop the killing of Philistinian youth. I believe that when America, and the world see this film and its riveting narration that it will activate the hearts of the American people and they will be moved to action. They will contact their political representatives in Washington and tell him to bring this situation to an end by forcing the Zionists to the peace table in earnest; or face decreased appropriations from the $7 billion annually that is sent to this region by American tax payers to kill young rock throwing boys and innocent school girls. Statistics show that there were 350 children killed by Israeli soldiers; and the majority of these children were either going to or coming from school.
Please give me permission to send the film to you. I believe that once you view it you will learn historical facts that were not well organized and unclear. I need your mailing address and a phone number. Intend to send it by express mail. I can be reached at i-w-v@scs-net.org,.
With kindest regards,
Karriem Shabazz, President IWV, Ltd.

Attn: Donations Regarding: And The Band Plays On Wine and Collectibles Auction To benefit Jesse Bethel High School Jaguar Band
To whom it may concern:
Across the nation its a familiar theme, band programs in need or disappearing altogether. Jesse Bethel High School located in Vallejo, California, is no exception. The newest of three high schools in the Vallejo City Unified School District, it is currently in its fifth year of operation; and like so many other schools, without much financial support available for the band program.
With the exception of paying our band directors salary and a small portion of our yearly transportation expenses, the Vallejo City Unified School District has no budget or discretionary money available for our band program; therefore the primary responsibility of the Jesse Bethel Band Boosters is to raise all other funds necessary to run our program. I am pleased however, to say that the districts current leadership and most certainly Jesse Bethel High School administration greatly understand and believe in the importance of music education in our school curriculum.
Jesse Bethel Jaguar Band is in great need of musical instruments, new or used. There are many students, who want to join our band and would unquestionably benefit from doing so, but they cant afford to rent or buy an instrument; and we have none available for them to use.
At this time, the Jesse Bethel Band Boosters is preparing for our 5th Annual Crab Feed Dinner/Auction February 8, 2003, held at the Jesse Bethel high school and our 2nd Annual Wine and Collectibles Auction to be held at the Benicia Clocktower, May 4 2003. By donating you will be helping to support a wonderful award winning band program.
Researchers have proven and statistics indicate that children in band, orchestra or choir develop higher cognitive skills and increased ability to analyze and evaluate information. Weve watched them learn about teamwork and develop conflict resolution skills required for success in the modern workplace, all while enjoying the healthy, positive activity our band program provides.
The goal of the Jesse Bethel Band Boosters is to give more students the opportunity to experience the countless rewards of being involved in our band program your donation for our fundraisers will help make this dream a reality.
Any donation you can make at this time, BIG or small will in insure that the band will play on. Your items will be sold at auction or raffled. Should you have any questions, I can be reached at (707) 642-7521, ext. 2. Thank you in advance for your consideration of our request.

Dear Rob Reiner, I am a 17 year old teenager from Cumbria in England. I have a promising proposition for you, in which a brilliant adventure movie can be made. It would be similar to my favourite movie, "stand by me", which you created. That film moved me so much because after that I was always searching for the perfect adventure with my best friends. The new film could be based on an adventure for 4 english kids, in the natural and inspirational countryside. There are many perfect locations for the film in which I have found and could introduce you too, because sometimes locations can help make a good film. I have lots of ideas for the film that are from my own personal experiences. For example, just one of the stupid ideas was to collect lots of bottles and big barrels from the beach to create a raft to sail down a river by us. We tied the bottles to our bikes and where cycling up an old road when two of the "coolest" guys in our school, older than us, saw us whilst on their motorbikes. They began to laugh and take the mickey out of us. In the film the kids could experience an outcome that changes the way they think for the rest of their life, e.g. "death, sexual abuse, threats". You can have good suitable music to add to the film in whatever time scale you set it too. Because the music in "stand by me" was good and that was from the fifties. I could even send you some images of the locations I mean. Please have a think about this prospect and tell me what you think about it. My e-mail address is robicecube@yahoo.co.uk
Yours sincerly Robert Harrison

A mix of Washington and Hollywood took over for the rest of the day. Film maker Rob Reiner, who led the successful California ballot fight in 1998 for a hike in tobacco taxes in order to fund government programs for children, also denounced the Bush tax cut. He complained, The money has been taken off the table and is therefore unavailable for funding new social programs. He lamented that last November almost half [of Americans] voted against their own best interests. He spoke up passionately for government serving people and making sure people get what they need. Dear Mr. Reiner: I work for Public Health Nursing in Sacramento County. I am the Lead Office Clerk. It is my job to help the PH Nurses with the mounds and mounds of paperwork. I was priviledged to view your videos for new Parents your foundation is planning on giving to "New" Parents. Bravo! Though some of the wording used in the pamphlets and handouts have words that some of our clients may have problems understanding, I thought they were a great thing to give to 'new' parents. Where were you when I was having my first baby. I am glad that there will be some 'new' parent that will benefit from your courageous efforts. Well done. Caroline Meier meierc@saccounty.net

Rob,
Recently, I was rather surprised to hear you support Bush's educational agenda, based on the changes made in Texas. Perhaps you have not read a detailed analysis of what actually transpired there. You might want to take a look at the following scholarly journal article, published online in the American Educational Research Association's Educational Policy Analysis Archives, The Myth of the Texas Miracle in Education:
http://epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v8n41/
High standards, standardized testing, and retention in grade are not magic bullets. Much more will be needed to ameliorate the situation and address the issues of poverty and equity in education that persist in low-income areas of our country. See: Jonathan Kozol's, Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools, available at: http://www.commoncouragepress.com/kozol_savage.html
Also take a look at, Equity and Adequacy in Education Finance: Issues and Perspectives (full text available online):
http://www.nap.edu/books/0309065631/html/7.html
By the way, much of what was done in Texas has also been tried in Chicago. Grade retention is a very serious concern for many educators here because compulsory school attendance ends at age 16 (as in many other states), and, when repeatedly held back, students are at-risk of becoming GRADE SCHOOL drop outs!!
Your work, in regard to raising public awareness and advocacy for children, early intervention, and effective education, is very much appreciated! (Also love what you do in your day job!)
Sincerely, Heidi Weiman http://EdPsyc.org
